Body Type Calculator

This body type calculator finds the female body shape that four measurements produce, along with the waist-hip ratio that goes with them. Enter bust, waist, high hip, and hip in centimetres or inches and it returns one of seven shapes plus your WHR. A woman measuring 90, 80, 80, and 90 cm is a rectangle with a WHR of 0.89. The shape is a clothing-fit description. The ratio is the number with health meaning, and the two answer different questions.

Taking the four measurements

Accuracy here decides everything downstream, since a shape can flip on a single inch. Stand straight with your arms at your sides and keep the tape snug without pulling it tight enough to dent the skin, which reads short and shifts the result.

  • Bust: around the chest at the fullest part of the breasts, wearing a bra that fits properly.
  • Waist: the smallest circumference of the natural waist, just above the belly button.
  • High hip: around the upper swell of the hip across the pelvic bone, roughly 7 inches or 18 cm below the natural waist. This one is easy to take too low, and it is the measurement that separates a spoon from a bottom hourglass.
  • Hip: the largest circumference around the fullest part of the buttocks.

The seven body shapes and the rules behind them

The classification comes from a 2007 study by Lee, Istook, Nam, and Park in the International Journal of Clothing Science and Technology, which sorted women into seven categories from body-scan data. Every rule below works in inches, and the calculator converts your figures before testing them. Rules are checked in order, and the first one that fits is the answer.

  • Hourglass: bust minus hips is 1 inch or less, hips minus bust is under 3.6 inches, and either bust minus waist is 9 inches or more or hips minus waist is 10 inches or more.
  • Bottom hourglass: hips exceed bust by 3.6 to 10 inches, hips minus waist is 9 inches or more, and high hip divided by waist is under 1.193.
  • Top hourglass: bust exceeds hips by more than 1 inch but less than 10, and bust minus waist is 9 inches or more.
  • Spoon: hips exceed bust by more than 2 inches, hips minus waist is 7 inches or more, and high hip divided by waist is 1.193 or more.
  • Triangle: hips exceed bust by 3.6 inches or more, and hips minus waist is under 9 inches.
  • Inverted triangle: bust exceeds hips by 3.6 inches or more, and bust minus waist is under 9 inches.
  • Rectangle: bust and hips are within 3.6 inches of each other, bust minus waist is under 9 inches, and hips minus waist is under 10 inches.

Some measurement sets match none of the seven, and the calculator says so rather than forcing a label. The ranges inside each shape are also wide, so two women sharing a category can look quite different.

The four shapes the fashion industry uses

Clothing retailers usually work with four broad classes rather than seven, and the vocabulary overlaps confusingly with the list above. Apple, or inverted triangle, describes broader shoulders and bust than hips. Banana, straight, or rectangle covers a waist less than 9 inches smaller than the bust or hips. Pear, spoon, bell, or triangle means hips larger than the bust. Hourglass, sometimes called the X shape, means bust and hips close in size with a distinctly narrower waist.

The distribution is not what marketing implies. A study of more than 6,000 women at North Carolina State University in 2005 found 46% were banana-shaped, just over 20% pear, just under 14% apple, and only 8% hourglass. The shape presented as the default in clothing design is the rarest one measured.

What the waist-hip ratio measures

Waist-hip ratio is waist circumference divided by hip circumference, and it describes where your body stores fat rather than how much you carry. A 34-inch waist with 40-inch hips gives 34 divided by 40, or 0.85. Because it is a ratio, the units cancel, so centimetres and inches produce the same number.

The reason it matters is that fat around the middle behaves differently from fat on the hips and thighs. Visceral fat packed around the abdominal organs is metabolically active and is associated with higher risk than the subcutaneous fat carried lower down. A higher ratio means more of your fat sits in the riskier place.

What your ratio means for health

The World Health Organization treats a WHR of 0.85 or above in women, and 0.90 or above in men, as abdominal obesity. Below 0.80 is the low-risk band for women, and 0.80 to 0.84 sits in between. The full thresholds appear in the WHO expert consultation report linked from the calculator above.

Waist circumference on its own carries thresholds too, and the WHO report gives them alongside the ratio: for women, 80 cm signals increased risk and 88 cm substantially increased risk. Cutoffs are lower for South Asian, Chinese, and Japanese populations, where metabolic risk appears at smaller measurements, so a single global number understates risk for some women.

WHR competes well with BMI as a predictor. The INTERHEART case-control study of about 27,000 people across 52 countries, published by Yusuf and colleagues in the Lancet in 2005, found WHR a stronger predictor of heart attack than BMI, and estimated that redefining obesity by WHR rather than BMI would roughly triple the number of people identified as at risk. In adults over 75, WHR also outperforms both BMI and waist circumference for predicting mortality.

One correction is worth making, because it circulates widely: a WHR above 0.85 does not correspond to a BMI above 30. The two measure different things, and a woman can sit above the WHR threshold at a normal BMI, or below it while carrying substantial weight. Run both. Waist-to-height ratio, the simpler check

A newer measure is easier to remember and needs only one extra number: keep your waist under half your height. A woman 165 cm tall aims for a waist below 82.5 cm. This waist-to-height ratio needs no hip measurement, applies across ethnic groups without separate cutoffs, and performs at least as well as WHR for flagging cardiometabolic risk, which is why several clinical guidelines now lead with it.

Ratio, fertility, and what the research does not say

WHR correlates with fertility measures in both directions. Women with ratios above 0.80 show lower pregnancy rates than those between 0.70 and 0.79 in assisted-conception studies. It has also been studied in relation to cognitive measures and to perceived attractiveness, and that last strand is where interpretation gets stretched furthest beyond the evidence.

Two things follow. Correlation across large samples says little about any individual, and a ratio is not a diagnosis. Fat distribution is substantially genetic, changes with age, and shifts toward the abdomen after menopause as oestrogen falls, which raises WHR without any change in habits. Pregnancy makes the measurement meaningless for its duration.

Shape is not a health verdict

Body shape here is a garment-fitting category, and the seven-way split exists because clothing patterns have to fit real bodies. It carries no target and no ranking, and the standards behind it are cultural rather than clinical, varying between countries and decades.

Your shape barely moves with weight change, because the skeleton underneath it does not. Losing or gaining weight usually shifts the measurements together and leaves the category intact. The waist-hip ratio does move, which is the practical reason to watch that number instead. How this calculator works

Your four measurements are converted to inches, then tested against the seven rules in the order listed above, so a set that satisfies two rules takes the earlier one. The hourglass rule is read as two required conditions followed by a pair where either one qualifies. The waist-hip ratio is a straight division of waist by hip, shown to two decimal places, and it is banded against the WHO thresholds for women at 0.80 and 0.85.
